Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs for Tutors and Volunteers

What is required to be a tutor?

Tutors share their love for reading and learning. The ability to relate to adults from other backgrounds and to be sensitive to their needs is essential.  Tutors should have at least a high school education and be 18 years old. We have a special need for volunteers willing to work with two to five learners in small groups, and a need for tutors to help learners with special needs. We also need volunteers to assist with math, English as a second language, and GED.

An orientation is provided for all tutors and the Florence Area Literacy Council staff is available to help tutors and students on a daily basis.

How are literacy tutors and adult learners matched?

Tutors are matched with learners according to work schedules, tutoring locations and tutor/learner preferences. Tutoring takes place at libraries, churches and the Council office. Tutoring is NOT done in private homes.

How often do tutors and learners meet?

Tutoring pairs meet a minimum of once a week in 1-1½ hour sessions. We prefer twice a week. Working with a learner consistently three hours per week insures more satisfactory progress.

Is there a cost for training or tutoring?

Books and learning materials are provided to the learners at no cost.  A tutor’s first set of tutoring books, teachers guide and materials are provided at no cost. We are grateful for voluntary, tax-deductible contributions to offset the cost of training materials and supplies. The materials provided to a tutor and student costs approximately $30.  Help paying for these expenses is very much appreciated but voluntary.

How do I track the time spent with my student?

A monthly report is provided to each tutor.  Tutors complete the form and turn it in at the end of each month. The report can be faxed to 843-667-1600, mailed to FALC, 240 S. Dargan Street, Florence, SC 29506, or emailed to litlacescoord@yahoo.com

How do I track my student’s academic progress?

Students are given skills assessments during registration, and post assessments are given after approximately 40-60 instructional hours to track progress.

Aren’t literacy programs only for people who can’t read?

No. We welcome students that are interested in brushing up their academic skills. We agree with the 2002 National Assessment of Adult Literacy, “using printed and written information to function in society, to achieve one’s goals, and to develop one’s knowledge and potential.” is the definition of literacy. Thus, we offer services in all academic areas.
